I have shipped stores on Shopify Plus and Adobe Commerce (Magento) for seven years, across food, fashion, electronics, and B2B. The "which platform is better" question is the wrong question. The right one is: which platform makes the next 24 months of your roadmap cheaper to execute?
Here is the decision framework I use.
Pick Shopify Plus when…
- Your catalog is under ~50,000 SKUs with predictable variant logic.
- Your team is lean (no dedicated platform engineer).
- You need to ship campaigns weekly and care about marketing velocity over deep customization.
- Your checkout is the strategic asset — Shop Pay alone lifts conversion 5–10% on returning shoppers.
- You want a fixed, predictable cost ceiling for the platform itself.
Shopify's gift is constraint. The platform refuses to let you do things that would be slow, fragile, or unmaintainable. That is exactly the right gift for most brands.
Pick Adobe Commerce when…
- You have deep B2B requirements: tiered pricing per buyer, quote-to-cart, negotiated catalogs.
- Your ERP is the source of truth and you need rich, bi-directional sync (we usually pair it with Odoo or SAP).
- Your catalog is large or complex — 100k+ SKUs, configurable products with non-trivial rules, multi-warehouse inventory.
- You have a product engineering team that can own the platform end-to-end.
- You operate multi-store, multi-locale, multi-currency at a scale where Shopify Markets starts to crack.
Adobe rewards investment. The reason it carries a bad reputation is that most teams pay the cost of the platform without ever spending the capital it needs to pay them back.
The headless question
Both platforms can run headless. My rule:
- Go headless on Shopify only if you have a real reason — international SEO, app-shell performance targets, or shared front-end across brands. Otherwise the native theme system is faster, cheaper, and good enough.
- Go headless on Adobe more readily — the front end is the weakest part of the platform, and PWA Studio or a Next.js front decoupled from the API is usually a step forward.
The migration trap
The single most expensive mistake I see brands make is migrating because the platform feels slow. Nine times out of ten, the platform is fine and the implementation is the problem. Before migrating, run a real audit:
- Core Web Vitals on a clean theme, no third-party scripts.
- Apps and extensions, ranked by request count and CPU cost.
- A 30-day inventory of ERP, OMS, and marketing integration debt.
If the audit says rebuild, rebuild on the same platform first. If it says migrate, migrate with a 6-month plan, not a 6-week one.
The honest verdict
For 80% of mid-market DTC brands, Shopify Plus is the right answer in 2026. For the 20% with real B2B, large catalogs, or ERP-first operations, Adobe Commerce remains the best tool on the market — but only if you staff it properly.
The platform never made anyone money. The operating model does.
