If you sell online in Saudi Arabia in 2026, your platform choice is no longer "Shopify or Magento." It is now a four-way decision between Shopify Plus, Salla, Zid, and Adobe Commerce (Magento). After deploying stores on all four for KSA brands, here is the field-tested answer to the most common question I get.
The four-platform map
| Platform | Best fit | Monthly cost (SAR) | ZATCA-ready |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salla | 0 – 2M SAR/year, single-brand DTC, Arabic-first | 1,500–4,500 | ✅ native |
| Zid | 0 – 3M SAR/year, KSA logistics-heavy | 1,200–5,000 | ✅ native |
| Shopify Plus | 3M – 100M SAR/year, multi-market, multi-language | ~8,500 | via certified apps |
| Adobe Commerce | 30M+ SAR/year, B2B, complex catalogs | 10,000+ (license alone) | via ERP/middleware |
Pick Salla when…
- Your team works in Arabic first and you want all admin, support, and docs in Arabic.
- You need Mada, Apple Pay, STC Pay, Tabby, Tamara on day one without integration work.
- You want ZATCA Phase 2 e-invoicing baked in, not bolted on.
- Your shipping is mostly SMSA, Aramex, SPL, J&T inside the Kingdom.
- You are under 2M SAR/year and want zero infrastructure ownership.
Pick Zid when…
- You ship heavy volumes inside KSA and want Zid's fulfillment + last-mile partnerships in one dashboard.
- You want a slightly more flexible theme system than Salla, while keeping Arabic-first UX.
- You sell across multiple offline branches and online and want unified inventory.
Pick Shopify Plus when…
- You are scaling beyond 3–5M SAR/year and Salla/Zid start to feel restrictive.
- You are multi-market — selling in KSA, UAE, Kuwait, and beyond with different currencies and tax rules.
- You want the strongest checkout on the planet (Shop Pay, accelerated checkouts) for repeat buyers.
- You will pair Shopify with a Saudi-certified e-invoicing app (Wafeq, ZATCA-approved partners) for ZATCA Phase 2 compliance.
Pick Adobe Commerce (Magento) when…
- You run real B2B: per-buyer pricing, quote-to-cart, negotiated catalogs, credit terms.
- Your ERP (Odoo, SAP, Oracle) is the source of truth and you need deep bi-directional sync.
- You have 100,000+ SKUs across multiple warehouses.
- You have, or will hire, a product engineering team that owns the platform.
The KSA-specific decision factors most consultants ignore
- ZATCA Phase 2 e-invoicing. Mandatory for almost every taxable business. Salla and Zid handle this natively. Shopify and Magento do not — you'll need a certified middleware (Wafeq, ClearTax KSA, or your ERP).
- Mada gateway. Salla and Zid are pre-integrated. On Shopify and Magento you connect via HyperPay, Moyasar, Tap, or PayTabs — all good, but it is configuration work.
- BNPL is a conversion driver. Tabby and Tamara routinely lift KSA AOV 15–25%. Make sure your platform supports both without custom dev.
- Arabic SEO. Salla and Zid auto-generate clean Arabic URLs and meta. Shopify needs careful configuration. Magento can do whatever you build into it.
- Cash on delivery (COD). Still meaningful in KSA. Whichever platform you pick, model COD return rates into your unit economics from day one.
The honest verdict for 2026
For KSA-only brands under 3M SAR/year, Salla or Zid wins on speed-to-launch and local payment readiness. For brands scaling regionally or globally, Shopify Plus is the right next platform. For enterprise B2B or 100k+ SKU catalogs, Adobe Commerce is still the best tool — if you staff it.
The wrong move is to over-buy. I have seen too many Saudi brands jump straight to Magento for a 500-SKU DTC business and burn 18 months of runway on a platform they didn't need yet.
