Arabic SEO is treated as an afterthought by 90% of agencies in MENA. They translate an English page, slap it under /ar/, and wonder why it never ranks. After taking sites from invisible to page-one on google.com.sa and google.com.jo across retail, legal, immigration, F&B and finance, here is the actual playbook.
1. Stop translating. Start writing intent.
The single biggest mistake in Arabic SEO is direct translation. A Saudi searcher does not type "best ERP software for SMEs." They type "افضل برنامج محاسبة للشركات الصغيرة في السعودية" — and they often spell it without diacritics, with مدى/ZATCA mentioned in passing, and frequently in the Saudi dialect.
Build your keyword research natively in Arabic. Use:
- Google autocomplete on google.com.sa and google.com.jo (not google.com).
- "People Also Ask" boxes — they reveal the actual search language.
- Local Arabic content sites (Hsoub, Argaam, Zid blog, Salla blog) to mirror the lexicon your audience already trusts.
2. Hreflang and URL structure — the non-negotiables
If you serve EN + AR, you need:
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="https://yoursite.com/page">
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="ar" href="https://yoursite.com/ar/page">
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://yoursite.com/page">
For country-specific stores (KSA vs JO vs UAE), use hreflang="ar-SA", ar-JO, ar-AE — and make sure each variant has its own canonical, its own currency, and its own contact info.
Arabic URL slugs: keep them transliterated Latin for stability (/ar/erp-saudi-arabia), not Arabic characters, unless your CMS handles UTF-8 URLs gracefully end-to-end. Both work, but transliterated Latin avoids dozens of subtle infrastructure bugs.
3. RTL is a technical SEO concern, not just a CSS one
- dir="rtl" + lang="ar" on
<html>— both, every page. - Open Graph + Twitter card meta must carry Arabic titles and descriptions on AR pages. A surprising number of sites still ship English meta on Arabic URLs.
- Schema in Arabic. Set
"inLanguage": "ar"on Article, BreadcrumbList, FAQPage. Google uses it as a strong language signal. - Font loading. A 4-second font swap on Arabic pages kills CLS and INP. Self-host the Arabic font or use a tiny WOFF2 subset.
4. Country signals that matter in KSA and Jordan
- Local hosting or CDN edge. Cloudflare or AWS Middle East (Bahrain/UAE) edges deliver sub-100ms TTFB to KSA and JO. Big ranking signal in both regions in 2026.
- Local business profiles. Google Business Profile in Arabic, with Arabic NAP (Name/Address/Phone), Arabic categories, and reviews in Arabic. We did this for Mohammed Al-Manea Company across multiple KSA cities and saw a measurable lift inside 60 days.
- Backlinks from regional domains. A single link from a credible Saudi or Jordanian publication (Argaam, Al-Riyadh, Roya News, Argaam, Hsoub) outweighs ten links from generic global SEO directories.
- Phone with local country code on every page (+966 for KSA, +962 for JO). Click-to-call schema.
5. Content depth beats content count
Arabic SERPs in 2026 reward depth. The pages that rank for "افضل منصة تجارة الكترونية في السعودية" or "كيف افتح متجر الكتروني في الاردن" are 2,500–4,000 words deep, with original comparison tables, real prices in SAR/JOD, and named local players. Templated 800-word translations get crushed.
Aim for fewer, deeper Arabic articles, not more shallow ones.
6. The technical SEO checklist for Arabic sites
- Server response < 200ms from a KSA or JO IP.
- Mobile-first design — > 80% of MENA search traffic is mobile.
- Clean Arabic XML sitemap with hreflang annotations.
- HTTPS, HTTP/2 minimum, HTTP/3 ideal.
- Structured data: Article, BreadcrumbList, FAQPage, LocalBusiness (for service brands).
- Image alt text in Arabic for AR pages, English for EN pages.
What I have seen actually move rankings
For Toy Triangle (Toys R Us KSA), the lift came from technical restructuring + Arabic taxonomy clean-up, not link building. For Reach Immigration, it came from rebuilding the Arabic Passport Index and earning genuine Jordanian press links. For Syouri Law, it came from category depth — long, useful Arabic legal explainers that nobody else had bothered to write.
The pattern is the same every time. Treat Arabic as a first-class language, ship technical fundamentals, write original Arabic depth, and earn local links. Then watch google.com.sa and google.com.jo reward you.
